Capo on Guitar Chart

A capo lets you play familiar open-chord shapes in a different key. Put it on the 2nd fret and play a G shape, and you hear an A. Use the chart to see the sounding chord for any shape and fret, or enter the song’s key and your favourite shapes to find where to put the capo. The transposer converts a whole chord progression at once.

How a capo changes the key

A capo clamps across all the strings at one fret, shortening them so everything sounds higher. Each fret raises the pitch by one semitone. If you play a G-shape chord with the capo on the 2nd fret, the chord sounds two semitones higher: A. Your fingers use the same familiar shapes, but the song is in a new key — which is why capos are so useful for matching a singer’s range or a recording.

Read across from the capo fret to the shape you play to find the sounding chord. Minor and seventh shapes follow the same pattern: an Em shape with capo 2 sounds as F♯m.

Finding the capo fret for a song

1. Find the song’s key (the first or last chord is often a good clue).
2. Pick a family of shapes you like playing: G, C, D, A or E.
3. Count the semitones from the shape’s key up to the song’s key — that is the capo fret.
4. Transpose each chord of the song down by the same number of semitones to get the shapes to play.

Example: a song in B♭ with G shapes needs the capo on fret 3 (G → A♭ → A → B♭). The chords B♭, F, Gm, E♭ become the shapes G, D, Em, C.

Why guitarists use a capo

• Singing range — move a song up to suit your voice without learning new chords.
• Avoid barre chords — play keys like B♭ or F♯ with open shapes.
• Brighter sound — open strings ring out, giving a shimmering tone.
• Two-guitar arrangements — one plays open shapes, another plays different shapes higher up the neck, filling out the sound.
• Match a recording — many famous songs are played with a capo.

Worked example

A singer wants “G D Em C” moved up so it suits her voice in A major. The calculator shows A major can be played with G shapes and the capo on fret 2. Switching to “what my shapes sound like” with capo 2 turns G D Em C into A E F♯m D. If she prefers C shapes, the capo would need fret 9 — too high for comfortable playing — so G shapes at fret 2 are the better choice.

Capo tips

• Place the capo just behind the fret, not on top of it, for clean notes.
• Use the lightest pressure that stops buzzing to avoid pulling strings sharp.
• Re-tune after putting the capo on if chords sound slightly off.
• Partial capos cover only some strings for alternative voicings.
• Tab written “capo 3” shows fret numbers relative to the capo, as if it were the nut.

Capo and scales for soloing

With a capo on, all scale patterns move with it. If you solo in the key of A with the capo at fret 2 using G-shape chords, you can play the G major scale shapes relative to the capo, and they will sound in A. Many players find it simpler to take the capo off for solos and play in the sounding key; either way works, as long as you know which key you are really in.

Reading songbooks and tabs with capo markings

Songbooks usually print the shapes you play, with a note such as “Capo 3”. Some also show the sounding chords in brackets for other instruments. When playing with a pianist or bassist, give them the sounding key and chords — the calculator’s “sounding chords” line is exactly what they need.

Transposing without a capo
